IFComp News: On styling Inform-based entries for online play

Everything in last year’s post about IFComp online play remains true for this year. Except for the bit about us being hard at work, that is – I’m happy to report that we wrapped all that work in time for the 2104 competition, and that work will continue to serve this year’s comp as well.

I did wish to make a small clarification of interest to Inform-using authors, regarding the matter of uploading bare game files versus whole websites.

Bare Z-code or Glulx file uploads will use Parchment’s minimal, default style of black text on a white background, as seen here, for example. This makes for a plain but functional online-play version of your game.

If you want to either apply your own CSS-based styles to your game’s Parchment version, or you wish to use the more full-featured Quixe as your game’s web-based interpreter rather than Parchment, then upload your entry as an entire, self-contained website, rather than just the plain story file.

Generally speaking, this latter path refers to the results of adding the magic Release along with an interpreter line to your Inform project’s source. If you wish, you can then use custom CSS, HTML, and other standard techniques to style the resulting website as much as you’d like. Finally, package that site up with a zip utility, and make that one file your uploaded IFComp entry.
