Advanced Fighting Fantasy 2 • Alternative Experience

Advanced Fighting Fantasy 2 • Alternative Experience

I am a little skeptical about allowing XP advancement in AFF2. What have your experiences been? Have players always gone for the Skill characteristic, or do they put XP into different things? What alternatives have you used?

One option that I thought about was just giving out 6-8 experience points per adventure and, instead of increasing your attributes permanently, you just spend experience points to increase any roll by +1. So if you have 5 experience points and you roll a 6 during the game, you can spend one to increase your roll to a 7 (reducing your experience point pool to 4).

The second option I thought of was just to allow experience points to increase Special Skills and learn new Spells (and not the main characteristics or talents). This way, you could also simplify the math and give out 5 experience points (instead of 50 XP) after each adventure. Spells would cost a number of experience points equal to their Magic Point cost and Special Skills would cost 2 XP for new skills and 1 XP per new score value after that (so increasing a Special Skill from 4 to 5 would cost 5 XP).

Or you could combine both methods, and allow players to choose how they use their XP. What do you think?
