When the earliest explorers ventured into the hinterland of
Fire island, they brought back more than treasures. They
brought back tales of terror.
Many a brave party of adventurers had faced the bloodied claws and
poisonous jaws of the koaladile. For some it is now more commonly
known by its old world moniker “the drop bear” for others, the piranha
of the forest!
If you go down to the woods today, you may be in for a little surprise.
For if you find a spot of blood on your shoulder, or that sweet stench of
death all around, you may just have stumbled into koaladile territory.
Then your only hope is to out-run your companions.

A koaladile is probably half crocodile, half koala. It is about half
the size of an average human - close to the size of a halfling. It has a
slightly elongated snout with powerful jaws and numerous large teeth,
evolved to rip apart flesh. Its claws are long and very sharp, helping
them to quickly scale any tree. Its long tail is useful in helping it hang
in trees and swim in water.
There is still a lot of fur on the bodies. Around the head and ears as
well as on the limbs.
The back, belly and part of the head and face are scaled. The scales
are very tough and act like a natural armor.

Koaladiles are a hybrid of a reptile and a marsupial mammal. It is
thought that magical experiments led to an unfortunate accident in a
time before the current age.
Early expeditions by adventurers to the koaladile’s original island
home saw many of the creatures captured, and the creature totally
eradicated from it's native home, at great expense, and returned to the
continents. It was thought they would make excellent
guard animals in the castles of the numerous kingdoms. However, it
was soon discovered that these creatures are inherently untrainable
and will be forever wild. Some have speculated that it is their magical
past, their ferocious nature and their propensity to fly into a rage that
ultimately lead to them being released into the wilds. It was thought
they would die out over time.
Over the centuries the koaladiles thrived in their new environment.
While not being a common feature of most forests, they do make any
who traverse a dense wood uneasy.

Koaladiles favour dense forests or jungles, but some have been
found in mangrove swamps. They live in tall trees and use them to
command their territory.
They are equally at home in bodies of still water, preferably of some
depth. Their preference is for trees though.
The do not exist in colder climates, but rather temperate and tropical
ones. They will not venture up any mountains, so they prefer the low
lying valleys, or hills.
They are carnivorous and are attracted to areas rich in wildlife.
The spots which are most likely to contain koaladiles are in trees
surrounding a pond within a forest. Animals are attracted to the
watering hole making it an ideal hunting ground for a small pack of
koaladiles.

Koaladiles are adept at setting simple ambushes. They will hang
up in the high branches of trees waiting for prey to venture into their
territory.

Almost all encounters should begin with the koaladiles dropping out
of the trees with +4 suprise attack. They will usually wait until all of the target group are
within the same area.
When there are not a lot of trees around, but a pond or lake is in the
area the koaladiles may hide submerged in the water, waiting for the
targeted group to drink, or come near the water’s edge.
While they will attack during the day, they are just as comfortable
attacking at night. Their darkseeing ability allows them to see perfectly
well on even the darkest evening.
They usually only attack for food or to protect their young. If they are
well fed, and have no young, they may be less likely to attack. If they
do, they are more likely to run away at the first sign of trouble.
The koaladile is renowned for its “death roll” where it grips onto its
prey and rolls it over and over again on the ground, or in any nearby
water. The speed of these death rolls daze the prey and confuse them
as to where they are while inflicting injuries.
Koaladiles tend to use claw attacks only, but if they are cornered they
will use their poisonous bite, and if they are attacked from behind (or
surrounded) they will use their second tail attack, on the enemies
behind them.

Koaladile poison creates a disorienting effect on the target. The
target becomes confused and stumbles around. It does not cause any
injury, but the effect renders the target unable to function properly,
and will suffer -2 Skill for 1D6 combat rounds
The koaladile uses the poisoned state to escape combat,
they do not attack the same target after it is poisoned(only in a death roll).
The poison is most used in defense when the koaladile feels trapped.
The effect of the poison wears off once the target’s immune system
has been given time to counteract the effects.

Death Roll - The koaladile can make a death roll when it scores a Critical hit,
the damage will be normal(NOT DOUBLED), but the koaladile's jaws will lock on to the target using it's poison,
and spinning its opponent on the ground, rolling them over and over slashing at them with its claws.
The victim must win an apposed strength test to break free.
