IFComp News: Return of the Golden Banana

IFComp News: Return of the Golden Banana

http://ift.tt/2f5mHzK

As a special mid-comp treat, I’m pleased to share that Hanon Ondricek has crafted a new, physical Golden Banana of Discord trophy, which he intends to award to the winner of 2016’s Golden Banana of Discord – the game which receives the highest standard deviation among its earned ratings.

Hanon has attached a stipulation to the trophy: it carries an obligation to be passed along to the following year’s Golden Banana recipient, but only with their consent. If declined, the trophy can visit another author instead. (In this case, the trophy’s recipient doesn’t “steal” the actual Golden Banana prize as a result; they just get to keep the trophy for a year. The real prize’s winner shall maintain their claim.) Hanon will observe this same rule himself regarding the trophy’s initial awardee.

Here in full is Hanon’s prize description and special rules:

To the entry with the greatest Standard Deviation in score: Potential One Year Curatorship of an Artifact, specifically the Golden Banana of Discord.

DUE TO THE DISCORDANT NATURE of the Artifact, current possessor will evaluate prospective recipient ability and willingness and convenience to re-submit the Golden Banana of Discord (hereafter referred to as GBD) as a prize in next year’s IFComp with these same requested requirements.

IF PROSPECTIVE BANANA CURATOR is unwilling or deemed to not have sufficient logistical safety measures and understanding of DISCORD to safely curate and host the artifact and assume responsibility of passing it to next year’s prospective recipient, then current possessor WITH THE BANANA’S APPROVAL may choose another qualified author with an entry in the current year as prospective recipient. This chosen recipient need not excel in any measure of Standard Deviation. THIS IS THE DISCORD THE BANANA APPROVES.

THE BANANA IS PERFECTLY SAFE. Only when the GBD remains globally stationary for fifteen months can Discord rise to dangerous levels. The recipient understands the needs of the banana and the requirement of yearly re-location for their own personal comfort and THE BANANA DOES NOT ACCIDENTALLY CREATE SUPERNOVAE.

And here is a photograph of the trophy, which its creator ran through a heavy Prisma filter to better preserve its mystery. (Its first recipient can bring whatever photographic glories they wish to it.)

This is the third banana trophy in IFComp history, and we hope it stays in circulation a bit longer than the last ones!
