Yeah there's not really a game balance issue with minor magic being common. You have to be pretty imaginative to get much use out of it in a fight! It's more about how magic is thought of in your game world.Eddie wrote:
but minor magic wouldn't necessarily reflect in a fight anyway
You could look at that as powerful spellcasters are rare (in NW Allansia anyway) but tend to be the guys in charge if they want to be. Their presence to me doesn't mean there has to be loads of lesser spellcasters around.Eddie wrote:
your adventures normally only involved a few at a time (warlock of fire top mountain: just Zagor, City of Thieves 2 (Nicodemus and Zanbar Bone), Forest of Doom 1 (Yaztromo only I think), Return to Firetop mountain had 2 (Zagor and Yaztromo) island of the undead had loads of course)
That's true, magic of at least low power is common with some races like elves. But humans may be very wary and even fearful of those magical races.Eddie wrote:
each orc, troll or goblin tribe would have their own shamans or witch doctors, some of whom might actually have magical ability, certainly elven settlements would have plenty
Coming back to the character tables, the problem is there's no easy way to adjust them if they don't match your view of how common magic is. Personally I'm very wary of magic becoming mundane. Way back when we were playing D&D it got completely out of hand in the Known World setting. If you've ever seen the "Book of Wondrous Inventions" you'll know what I'm talking about, it had magically powered washing machines and rubbish like that!
