In the playtesting that I have done insofar for Shazaar gazzetteer, I devalued all "standard" price lists from gold to silver piece, making this way the silver and copper pieces actually the real currency used by normal people, while gold is used only for big transaction or for the super-rich.
In FF literature usually a beer is worth at least one gold coin, so there would be almost no occasion to use silver coins (worth one tenth of a beer) and copper coins (worth one hundredth of a beer!) would be just a nuisance to carry (as they are in FF).
