I looked at the Gremlins in OotP and thought they were a bit rubbish too. I was thinking of using them as the AFF version of this, http://ift.tt/1SKGx05. It's a bit of a RPG urban legend and I've seen references to it a few places.
The Winged Gremlins I wouldn't even use, the two don't seem to fit each other at all. If you want a small, winged wizard familiar there's the Fire Imp, the Homunculus and probably others I can't remember.
