The Caverns of Kalte – Attempt 1, Part 1

The Caverns of Kalte – Attempt 1, Part 1

Aside – Get used to ‘The [thing] of [thing]’ Lone Wolf titles, because there are going to be a LOT of them.

Even before I accepted the mission, the King had given orders to ready a ship for my departure.  Puts a whole new spin upon the idea of ‘voluntary’, doesn’t it?

The ‘Cardonal’ is the ship that has *ahem* ‘volunteered’ to take me north, and is picking up food, equipment and ‘kanu-dogs’ for my expedition.

Aside : No idea why these are described as ‘kanu-dogs’ rather than just ‘dogs’ or ‘huskies’, but then I’m the guy who still hasn’t figured out why in Revenge of the Sith, the youngsters are called ‘younglings’ rather than, you know, ‘children’.

Anyway, to sum up :

  1. I’m going to be taken to the edge of the ice wastes.
  2. An elite team of redshirts, sorry, I mean ‘guides’ will take me to the enemy lair / ice fortress known as Ikaya.
  3. Then ‘all’ I have to do is penetrate this heavily guarded fortress, capture one of the most powerful magicians in the world, and return to my ship.
  4. Just to make things that little more interesting, I’ve only got thirty (30) days before the freezing of the winter ice means that the Cardonal will have to leave, with or without me.

Take it away, Duff :

Well – In book 2 I had a time limit of 40 days.  Now its 30 days.  At this rate, by book 9 I’ll have to complete my mission by the afternoon of the day before.

After we’ve sailed for seven days, and I dread to think what the crew must think of me, forcing them out once more, a storm blows us off course (naturally), and we have to make port at the Ljuk ice shelf, rather than the Halle Ice Bluff.

Here’s another look at my map :

It appears to be a consensus that travelling back to our intended embarkation point would be too time-consuming, so we make plans to start our quest here.

That may be the wrong wizard.

At any rate, my guides give me the option of taking the longer, safer route (280 miles) or a route which partly goes straight across a the Viad Glacier (230 miles).

Either one is a ridiculous length of travel.

Of course, having said that, Amundsen’s journey to the South Pole (there and back) was around 1,600 miles (using 1911 technology) so maybe I shouldn’t  complain.

Of course, Amundsen didn’t have people trying to kill him along the way, either.

Because I’m a glutton for punishment, I decide to save 100 miles of travel, and journey along the Viad glacier.

Yeah, you just know that this isn’t going to go according to plan.
